Off camera, and therefore unknown to the viewer, a vacuum pump extracts the air from a sealed glass cube until the continuous drop in gaseous pressure causes an implosion. In this process extraction (an extrapolation of concepts of reduction, singularity, and indivisibility) sets in motion two opposing impulses: a destruction, which seems to undermine a categorical rationality often used to justify a compulsive obsession with control; and the controlled and systematic process through which this destruction is realized. The work also functions as a sly sequence that conceals and reveals the elements of time and space. By synthesizing temporal and spatial structures through a confrontation between stillness and movement, the video offers a surprising moment in which both structures are perceptually revealed.
