This series of images, selected from Dr. Lawrence Roberts’ doctoral thesis ‘Machine Perception of Three-dimensional Solids’, published in 1963, depicts a pioneering example of research in the field of pattern recognition in computer graphics. Specifically, the images illustrate how an algorithmic program enabled a computer to construct and display a three-dimensional array of solid objects from a two-dimensional photograph for the first time. This historical moment marks a significant milestone in the mechanization process that transitioned from the two-dimensional analog image to the three-dimensional digital image.
