Resonance

2006 – 2008
2 mobile phones, pressure sensor, audio amplifier, loudspeakers

Resonance captures the artist’s most intimate and personal presence—his heartbeat. From the moment the exhibition opens until it closes, the artist wears a sensor that monitors his heartbeat, translating it into live sound within the gallery. Visitors are immersed in this disembodied sound, with its source not immediately apparent. What are we hearing? Where is it coming from? Once the source is revealed as the artist’s heartbeat, new questions arise: Where is the artist? What is he doing? Can we be certain it’s his heartbeat? Or could it be someone else’s—or merely a recording?
